You want a COVID vaccine, but also want it Halal? Got you covered!

A vaccine developed by Dr. Peter Hotez — dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital — has been approved for use in Indonesia.

The approval of IndoVac, as the new version of Hotez’ Corbevax is called, is important for Muslim-majority countries, because it was the first halal vaccine, Hotez said. The vaccine was approved for emergency authorization use in Indonesia as a primary vaccine for adults.

By Hotez’s count, Corbevax has already found its way to 80 million people in India, including 70 million adolescents. The hope is that IndoVac will replicate the Corbevax’s India success in Indonesia, he said.

The plan, Hotez said, was to produce 20 million IndoVac doses this year, and 100 million doses by 2024. The recombinant protein-based COVID-19 vaccine was created in Houston by a team led by Hotez and Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi.

Hotez maintains the best approach to protecting the world against COVID-19 is through vaccinating all nations.

“Access to vaccines in the developing world is critical to the eradication of this virus,” he said.
