That's an old sci-fi trope that probably dates back to Jules Verne if not before. It was the marbles scene from Men in Black as well.

But it's really just a small part of Strange World. I've described it as Treasure Planet meets The Incredibles. Everything that happens is just an excuse to examine familial relationships, and the film nails that part.
