Spoilers

The "twist" is overblown. It couldn't have impacted anything since nobody knew, and it's really not that big a deal in the movie. It's not quite a MacGuffin; it's more of an explanation for why the place has so much activity.

Disney's problem is that they had no idea how to sell such an objectively weird, understated film. Like Treasure Planet, I suspect it'll have ardent supporters over the years because it is such a sweet, well-intended film.

These are precisely the sort of in-betweeners that cause so much indecision about theatrical vs. streaming. Day-and-date would have been vastly superior here, as more people would have discovered the genteel nature of the project that way. Instead, it'll get buried under an avalanche of negative PR.

Disney has largely made the right call on all its streaming debuts. They tried to send a message with Strange World that they cared about theatrical, too. This was just the wrong project to do so.
