Which is my concern, that choosing to show it seemingly uncritically could be seen as a political choice.

But now that I think about it, it wasn't at all uncritical. He's a 75 year old Cappo in Cosa Nostra who is stuck 25 years in the past due to his prison time. We're supposed to be critical of why we're identifying with his character.
