Since I was quite judgy of wastefulness when it comes to cryptocurrency, I should also be judgy of this kind of wastefulness that comes from decentralized redundancy.
The stampede can stress servers substantially. But once each server has a copy, then it's fine. If mastodon were the size of Twitter, with the hundreds of thousands of individual instances that would require, the stampede would be one of the more powerful DDOS tools on the planet.
And its energy usage and wastefulness would still be dwarfed by how wasteful cryptocurrency is.
I think I might have a solution in my deref.link project, but that'd require making more progress on it and also pitching the idea to receptive people. Maybe one day.
