airlines have about a billion things to worry about. could they be more helpful, probably.

but, if they have a policy to do A-B-C-D, and something goes wrong in that chain, they have a procedure to follow. if they had to think "gosh, maybe that person will be here in five more minutes, let's wait." then the standby people wouldn't be notified in time and the plane would be late - and people would complain.
or, if someone doesn't ask for a translator, or help, they aren't going to say 'maybe we should do something that no-one has asked for.'
people want cheap cheap flights, they want them on time, etc etc. you have to work WITH the airlines, what choice do you have?
