For hashtags, that's not true. Hashtag searches are across instancess. It just takes a while for them to populate, or whatever the word is. I've -- (edited)

found that the best way to search for hashtags, BTW, is through the URL (when using a browser).

For instance, if I click any hashtag in my timeline, my browser URL changes to https://mastodon.coffee/tags/politics (for instance). Then to search for another hashtag, I put https://mastodon.coffee/tags/sneakers into the URL.
