To be honest, the whole concept of an employer providing health benefits to its employees very strange.

That's partly because it's different from the system I grew up with - but I'm sure it's also partly because it's just weird.

Yep. In Australia there's a Medicare system, but if you earn over a certain amount ($40,000 or so) you have to purchase private health insurance.

You are only "required" (ie, taxed extra if you don't get it) to get private hospital cover. Non-hospital cover is entirely optional. nm
