You are only "required" (ie, taxed extra if you don't get it) to get private hospital cover. Non-hospital cover is entirely optional. nm

Though not all medical costs are reimbursed by Medicare, so some people choose to get supplement "extras" cover.
(Yes, I just put myself to sleep.)
