you're going to have to suspend disbelief

this was clearly written back when we still painted the Russian military with a patina of competence

right now they're talking about a plan to overrun Poland and be into Germany in seven days

recent events have shown that it is more likely that Poland would kick their asses before the rest of NATO would have a chance to show up
