Any plumbing smarties among you all?

Woke up yesterday to no hot or cold water to the kitchen sink or the dishwasher.
Can get water to the rest of the house - both in a bathroom on same floor as kitchen and bathroom on floor directly above kitchen.
I would imagine this rules out frozen pipe.
This afternoon - 24+ into it - I would start turning on told water in the sink. Noticed a drop came out. Thought it was just something residual that had been in the pipe.
But over the next hour I would turn the tap on, get a few more drops, then turn it off.
I leave the cold water tap on, and within about 10 minutes, the drops come out gradually faster until it's running on demand. So the cold water is back now.
Still no hot water.
Any ideas what's causing this?
I'd spent a lot of the day on hold trying to get hold of a plumber to no avail. As long as cold water stays on, I don't think we'll need an emergency call (emergency rates would apply tomorrow).
