Two things I take from that is that Matthew Francis isn't the best journalist and Forbes should do better.

You don't write an article attacking a dead person's character and then just delete the part that is your best evidence without comment because you had the wrong guy.
Of course if you edit in the correction like you should (and your editor should have forced you to do) then it pretty much kills the article and you might as well pull it.
