On New Year's Eve, I was getting a haircut in my brother's town in Connecticut. The conversation with the stylist went a now predictable way. -- (edited)

Stylist: "Oh you're visiting? Where are you from?"
Me: "I live in the city"
Stylist: "Oh, I hear things have gotten bad there"

I've had this conversation numerous times with numerous people over the past year. To the point that I'm beginning to think I'm crazy and there is a crime spree outside my window that I don't see.

There is definitely a widespread belief that NYC has fallen into disarray (more than normal at least, ha!) and crime is rampant.

I'm not annoyed at the stylist, but I'm wondering how to fix the message that's getting out about the city?

Anyway, at the end she expressed that she felt reassured that you could possibly make one of her trips to midtown that she likes to do. So there's that.
