In almost every media example, burner phones are used improperly.

The resulting usage patterns mean that algorithms can very easily correlate activity and link the burner to a monitored line.
But as far as I know, a typical burner phone would be a prepaid phone purchased for cash (importantly: when you are NOT carrying your non-burner primary phone), and never powered on within proximity of your residence, your place of work, or your existing primary phone.
