It sounds like the person you responded to is basing their experience off a few years ago, when Uber was cheaper.

It's been a while since it was true here. For a long time, Uber was always cheaper.

the problem in LA is less the price than COVID and the price jacks basically means you can't get a ride nearby during anything peak -- nm

here, uber drove their marketshare by undercutting taxi prices. taxi companies went out of business. uber prices skyrocketed. -- (link)
