The best way to prevent customer theft is through attentive customer service.

Attentive customer service barely exists anymore.

And given that very few stores have loss prevention officers on staff to prevent a grab and dash, customer service is the only really effective tool most places have.

Certainly they don't want you chasing after someone out of the store. The liability risk is huge. And customers who steal know they just need to make it out the door.
