Every little touch emphasizes the horror.
The man never identifies his rank, but the stars on the hat demonstrate that he has seen some shit and survived. Now, he's terrified.
And the woman of science calls for the unthinkable act.
That's how you get the point across without needless exposition. The visual cues drive the story.
