In response to "I think a hidden element to this issue is that people are doing a lot of unnecessary reading between the lines" by Reagen

Prior to announcing the update to the ride, was there a controversy of any real size?

Anecdotally, I was not aware of there being a lot of concern about the ride itself. Sure Song of the South was an issue, but as someone previously observed most people aren't aware of the connection or were able to disconnect the ride from the movie since the ride did not carry any of the racist or stereotypical components forward.

To me it appears that Disney wanted to make the update and saw an opportunity to score some social awareness points by making it appear that the choice was being driven in response to the BLM movement.

Which of course intentionally drew attention to its source material and generated this whole debate.
