My emphasis is on having my team "ready" (whatever that means) when the tournament starts.
I want to play a tough schedule because a) it's a true representation of your team's strengths and weaknesses, b) it gives PR advantages, and c) I think the algorithm gives players XP, and I think playing good teams gives you more XP. Consider the Tripwire if this sounds compelling. I believe this is THE main factor for things like performing better than your tournament seeding. There are a couple other things I also try to do.
I start out every season intending to practice nearly every discipline at least once, which I believe leads to well-roundedness. Usually by this point in the season there are 1 or 2 more critical practice disciplines I want to "cram" for 2 or 3 practice cycles. This season that's free throws and passing, but I've also already practiced defense, jumpshooting, finishing, film study, speed/agility, rebounding, etc. I believe some practices can "unlock" your team/players and I always try to have film study in the mix near the end of the season.
I will also mix up my team settings against weaker teams, like running fast even if I know my team plays better on normal. If a starter is playing under potential, bench him for a game when you're likely to win anyway. Same thing with shot settings, I try to tweak based on what the box score is telling me.
Once the tournament starts I kind of want to set it and forget it, so I think it's important to experiment a bit during the season and try to force some "virtual muscle confusion" onto your team.
