WD - that system is in place in most provinces through junior high

grades are ... kind of arbitrary, at least at that level. It's absurd for me to try and define the difference between an 82 and an 85 at that grade, and even in high school there's only scant justification for single digit differences. What we do at the JH level though is to make them qualitative, rather than quantitative. Do you have a handle on the skill that we asked you to master? Did you get this skill, but not that skill? That's what I'm looking for. A 4 is total mastery, a 3 is you got what we asked for, a 2 is several holes and a 1 is you didn't try. Then there's wiggle room in between with +.

Hilariously it all turns into a percentage anyway on the report card, but assignment to assignment, it's kind of bogus to say on this test you got 75 but on this one you got 82. We're not refining the material that closely at that age, and we don't test enough to make those divisions valid (and testing enough to do that would drive the kids insane and give no practice time).
