The difference between Junior High and Middle School isn’t about which grades are in it, it’s about the approach.

A junior high is just a junior version of a high school. Students travel through an individualized schedule that is at their level. So they have English, math, science, social studies, various electives, etc.
A middle school is often broken into teams so the same group of students has the same teachers for math, English, etc. who are able to work together in a small school setup, adjust the schedule daily and conference with each other about the process for individual students.
It’s a more modern idea and that’s why you see more middle schools than junior highs now.
