I've read a few similar articles about this and am having a hard time finding too much sympathy for these folks

they've know about this for years - hell they knew about it before the houses were even built - and they still bought homes there.
Sticking your head in the sand and assuming either that the problem will cease to exist, or that someone (eg the gov't) will step in and save the day is just really stupid
