I had to do a little digging, but there is actually a statute of limitations that would seem to apply. However, it can be extended if the defendant is

“continuously outside this state.”

CNBC says "Trump spent four years in the White House, and since leaving office in January 2021 has lived in Florida and New Jersey," so it sure sounds like the limit should be extended, but they don't say what kind of filing or judgment needs to occur for the extension.
