i don't know that audiences prefer it so much as the network model has been dying a slow death since Sopranos

but networks aren't huge fans of paying for 22 episodes of scripted anything either so a lot of the slide is on their neglect too
like would 10 episodes of Poker Face live on NBC be more profitable, all around, than whatever they're spending for six episodes of La Brea. i bet so!
