disagree on the antagonist. a big aspect of the book is war making tyrants of little men, and that's entirely what that's about.

Kat's death is still not battle related, as well as bleak and pointless. I'm pretty ok with all of it. some stuff has to get cut, he's adding a whole bit about setting the stage for the rise of fascism and the next war that happened after the book was written. if you're gonna adapt something, then *adapt* it. there's already a version just putting the book up on screen, why make another?
