aside from the bigots, of which there are far too many, the adverse effect i've heard/read the most is

regarding what some consider the sanctity of the term marriage and what it stand for in their minds.

these are people who say they are for equal rights, but that word itself is the issue for them. that letting it go beyond one man/one woman devalues the bond.

for those who do say the above is their reason, it's a harder argument to attempt to get them to see it's a civil rights issue. not to mention that separation of church and state is a tough sell for many, as well.

that said, i fear they are not in the majority of those who voted yes, especially because of the fear-mongering "the gays are coming, and they are going after your kids!" ads for the yes side. :/
