there was a rise in fascism in the US as a political idea in the 1920s-40s. it kind of died out as an overt idea, but reared its head

big time with Trump.
i'd say that maybe it was not defeated at all, but it's been here, sowing seeds for 100 years.
maybe we look at how Germany has handled it post-war - restricting speech, heavy penalty for fascist activities, huge public response to fascists (100 of them march, 100k show up to counter protest). how did they get there? they're definitely still fighting it but i think much more successfully than we are .
