So I’ve been pretty unhappy at my current job. Really not sure of the upward potential and I don’t want to be stuck filling out tax forms for the next 20 years.
Was blunt with them last review in March that I needed to know what the plan was for me and 20 years filling out 1120s sounded like a prison sentence. I got *crickets*. In the meantime they’ve essentially promised my boss’ job to someone else to fill a position. I’m not the greatest fit for it but it was an outlet. There are other potential opportunities but they rely on the CFO that is impossible to read.
A job opened up at a tax software firm that sounded interesting (running one of their products). Interviewed over the last six weeks and tentatively accepted the job on Monday subject to agreeing to an employment contract.
Tuesday is our big annual corporate event. It was going to be awkward talking to people knowing I was leaving but whatever. Oh, it’s also where they surprise announce promotions in front off all the US and Canadian employees. You see where this is going right?
In front of literally the entire company the CEO announces I’ve been promoted with two other people my age-ish in what certainly looks like an anointing of the next generation.
I have no other info from my current job on what this means. At the party afterwards I got congratulated by 100 people and couldn’t say anything. One person knew and hung out with me just to enjoy the awkwardness of it all.
Got in to talk to my (current) boss at 9:30 Wednesday. Said she didn’t know until Monday I was getting promoted which seemed weird but sometimes we do things weird. She has no information and the CFO (next in line and my new boss) is out all day at corporate events. Still no contract but I’m still pretty sure I’m leaving.
Thursday morning (have I mentioned i haven’t really slept since Monday night?) I get in to the CFO first thing. Has no idea that I asked the question last year. Said others had the same issue with my (old) boss. Said it should be obvious why me and the two others were promoted together and laid out a potential path to his job when people start retiring. Compensation isn’t done yet but expect bump.
Spent about two hours Thursday trying to resolve my weeklong crisis and finally decided to stay. Let software company know I was sorry but things changed. Still only the one person outside of my family knows anything and she’s sworn to take it to her grave.
TL:dr - Accepted new job Monday. Got promoted in front of entire company Tuesday. Found out my (old) boss was problem Thursday. Stayed.

If, like me, you might feel guilty about the other company ... don't. It's probably very far from the worst hiring existence they've had. -- nm

Congrats on the change. I hope it makes you happier. I didn't mean to, but I had to laugh at this one line.
