I actually thought the Oscar telecast was pretty great. Some observations as to why.

They pretty much stuck to the awards. They didn't throw in a lot of extra stuff.
Kimmel's monologue was fairly brief.
The nominated songs were performed.
There was the In Memoriam.
The skit in the audience didn't work, but it seemed like they needed filler for a stage change.
There were not superfluous musical numbers or a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Chicago's Best Picture win.
The speeches overall were good. Very few of them were dull. I think it helped that the EEAAO won so many and that whole group was just having a lot of fun.
The only big blunder was The Little Mermaid trailer intro. Had they done a more generic celebration of 100 years of Disney (like the 100 years of WB thing) and then the commercial "coincidentally" aired right after it, I would have been fine with that.
I honestly wasn't planning on staying up to watch the whole thing since I hadn't seen any of the movies, but the show itself was fun to watch, so I did.

I think what we’re seeing is that there’s a fine line between a great Oscars and a terrible Oscars.

I agree. Kimmel is good at this. Keeps it pretty basic. -- nm

I watched a few minutes here and there. Alas, some of those were the skit in the audience, so it was at that point an easy decision to turn it off.
