The first pennies were HUGE. But, yes, the sizing of coins is incongruent with the current metals composition.

If we were to redesign our system, I'd eliminate the penny and $1 and $2 notes. I'd add a $2 coin.
And I'd explore resizing notes the way Euro notes are sized. Lower denomination notes are smaller. This helps prevent "washing" low denom notes to reprint higher denoms when counterfeiting.
