A basic FIDO key generally only works in certain browsers, something more robust will work on different OSs,etc.

I recommend getting a USB-C or USB-A NFC yubikey. They're industry standard, well regarded devices. A cheap FIDO key will run you about $15, Yubikey $50. The NFC is nice because it works well with your cell phone as well as your computers.
I recommend getting two - one goes on your keychain, the other goes in with your birth certificate and other important docs.
I'd also say as a part of this, move away from text messages as part of your 2FA, get an authenticator app (Google Authenticator works fine) and add all of your items into there. Two benefits: it's more secure and if you only have wifi access and can't get a text message, you can still log in no problem.
