Statistics show that it depends on the profession and the educational background/salary of the employee.

Stanford and HBR have done some fascinating studies on it.
HBR had the most interesting quote, which is that managers are vastly more likely to say that it hurts productivity. They cherry-pick stats to support that argument. Meanwhile, workers swear it helps them, and the data supports that to an extent.
The catch in all this discussions comes down to how people define productivity.
