It's a backwards way of approaching device security, and doesn't really affect most people either.

With a dearth of data privacy laws in the US, the greater threat to the average consumer is the rampant harvesting of their data by basically EVERY app.
This TikTok "threat"/"ban" is probably just a way to apply political pressure to China, and has zero to do with what's being talked about in the media.
