Yes, there's an overabundance of nostalgic elements - but it's woven into the story in a way where some bits are extremely relevant to the plot, and others are just for fun, and the just-for-fun ones don't step on the toes of the important ones.
The story could probably be rewritten without any of them and still be as compelling, but they're successfully threading the needle of bringing them in in an additive way.
Except, of course, for DataLoreNoonianLaalB4. It makes no sense for him to have been hooked to the security system in that way. But I'll allow it, because Spiner. And because Daystrom has never made rational decisions around AIs.
