Spoils

The plot was a study of the complete havock a chaotic evil disorganized sociopath can bring down on "normal" people, be they regular citizens or established criminals. People expect a sense of order in their world whether it's a mob boss or a housewife at the supermarket or a guy who sees no shades of grey, he only sees good and evil, which resulted in a personal and public tragedy.

The joker said it best in the movie, "everybody has his price". So boiled down to the barest essence, the plot was about how much would it take to tear a good man (Harvey Dent) down and flip him to evil. I think the problem a lot of people have with this movie is the same problem the Batman character had. They (you) are struggling to find order and logic where there was none. The movie's plot was basically the same story Alfred told Bruce about the warlord and the rubies.

I can't make it any easier. :)
