The NBA wrote a letter to Nike telling them that the black and red sneakers Jordan wore are against the uniform rules. Jordan was wearing the sneakers in a pre-season game against the Knicks and as far as anyone can tell that was the only time he wore them. Jordan and Nike were never fined as far as anyone could find out. Jordan never wore them after the warning so no fines were issued.

Also, they weren't the Jordan 1 sneaker he was wearing that got the NBA upset. It was a sneaker called the Air Ship that wasn't created for Jordan but was just a regular Nike hightop sneaker. The Jordan 1 wasn't ready yet so they made a pair of Air Ships look like the Jordan 1, sort of.
