In a most interesting development, the word making the rounds today in Los Angeles is that former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre's WWE deal is coming to an end and the two sides haven't come to terms on a new deal yet.
Multiple sources confirmed today that McIntyre's deal is not up "imminently" but is in its final year.
Given how strongly McIntyre carried the company during the worst period of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems almost insane that WWE hasn't already locked him up to a new deal, but we are told that two sides aren't even close to one. McIntyre signed to return to WWE in 2015, initially as part of the NXT brand following a time period where he was one of the hottest, in demand talents in the world. He headlined Wrestlemania 36, defeating Brock Lesnar, although his run as WWE Champion was obviously stunted by being part of the Thunderdome era.
Should the two sides not come to terms and McIntyre moves on elsewhere, it could be this weekend's Wrestlemania 39 bout with McIntyre vs. GUNTHER vs. Sheamus is McIntyre's last Mania appearance. One would think just about every other major promotion from AEW and New Japan on down would certainly be interested should McIntyre land on the open market.
