we just keep a small lined notebook (like a coiled school one). I put all home-related things in it. Just simple stuff -- (edited)

like the date, what we did, contact info if relevant, and then tape the receipt, or paint chip, or brochure etc, or whatever with it.
we use it to track paint exact colours and brands, and when we painted; who did what plumbing/electrical, etc. Being as we do this stuff pretty rarely i assume the book will last forever, but if you need to remember who you had install that light fixture three years ago, it's there with all the contact info etc.
we have a separate garden journal, with yearly layout maps, etc.
