Our ampitheater barred lawn chairs (and umbrellas). I believe outside containers were also banned.

The first clutter and obstruct the view in addition to being able to be used as weapons or to conceal weapons.
Outside containers are barred to keep out alcohoi (even though the venue sold beer/wine). It allows them to control the amount of alcohol served (refuse to serve an drunk person, for instance) and, of course, allows them to sell the patrons other beverages.
