Electricity and roads are a perfect match: both of them are abstractions that have very flexible uses.
Petrol is a whole other thing. It's a single-purpose consumable with massive infrastructure needs to support it; when the demand subsides, that infrastructure will have to stand down.
No, I don't think it'll fully go away any time soon. But with any luck, it'll begin to get less prevalent. Begin fading into irrelevance, like compact discs.
