Jets use Jet A or A-1, which can be used in place of diesel but shortens the lifespan of diesel engines. Piston planes use avgas, which is leaded. -- nm

avgas is also usually very high octane. we couldn't leave it in accessible fuel dumps or it'd disappear into people's snowmobiles over the winter. -- nm
