I heard an interesting podcast about him. Apparently he's an ex-con turned cook and was a cook for Putin before getting into the private

military game. He got a big contract to supply the schools in Moscow. He gives them terrible food and uses that money to fund his operations.
But what was more interesting was a story about when his forces had strayed too close to a US base. The US base called someone in Russia and told them to tell the Wagner soldiers to back off. Russia said they didn't know anything about it. The Wagner guys got closer. The US calls back and tells them to call them and tell them to back off or they're going to open fire. Russia says they're not Russians. The US replies that they know they're Russians. Russia again says they're not Russians.
The Wagner group continued on and the US opened fire. There was a firefight and in the end the Wagner soldiers were completely wiped out. Russia left them to die.
