Though (probably too many Air Disaster eps) I do always question my choice of footwear and wonder if I should get some 'real' shoes to fly

Real as in almost dress shoes. All leather, no plastic / rubber soles or parts
Cause plastic / rubber melts and having shoes that aren't melted to your feet would be nice to have if the plane does survivablely crash and you're trying to get out
