Just realized that sports (i.e. hockey) play-by-play is a legacy of radio broadcasts that has no place in a visual medium.

Sure, we’re all accustomed to it and it’d be weird at this point to watch a sport without a play-by-play, but we’re LITERALLY WATCHING something happen. Do we need someone to tell us what’s happening, short of the accessibility audio-descriptor angle? Do we really need “John Mclane jumps off the roof with the firehose tied around his waste as the helicopter crashes into the building and flames erupt behind him” ???

Well, the Blackhawks weren't on tv until fairly recently.

If you can listen to synced radio announcers (as enabled on MLS Season Pass) you will find the TV announcers are less verbose on the play-by-play.

I and many other people use tv as a background to listen to while they do things like house stuff. the announcers are still important. -- nm*

The few times I've been able to watch broadcast hockey with just the rink noises and not the commentary have been captivating. -- nm
