It's not unique, imo. But it doesn't seem like other places eat it much if at all so I guess that makes it unique, in a way.

The ingredients are common ingredients for breakfast so it's far from special. IMO, what makes it a NY thing is that it's served on a hard roll to go. That's it. We eat it while we walk to work or while sitting outside waiting to go to work or do something. It's also something the vast majority here eat regularly so it's something we all have in common.
If it wasn't unique to NY then people wouldn't be so unfamiliar with it as a breakfast sandwich.
