In response to "anyone watching the Jeopardy Masters Tournament? spoils for how it is going so far? -- nm" by Beaker 🍺

I haven't been. But the regular show had an unusual result yesterday (spoils)

Loss by mis-wager.

Entering Final Jeopardy --
Champ: $26,000
Challenger 1: $14,400
Challenger 2: $5,800

Challengers both answer correctly. Champion misses, so Challenger 1 wins, right? Nope.
Champ: $26,000 - $3,000 = $23,000
Challenger 1: $14,400 + $8,000 = $22,400
Challenger 2: $5,800 + $5,798 = $11,598

Champ bet the amount needed to cover Challenger 1's double and rounded it up to an aesthetically pleasing number. She has no motivation to bet much more without going full Cliff Clavin.

Challenger 1 should either bet the max to force Champ's hand or bet just enough to beat the Champ in the event the Champ makes the expected cover bet ($2,801) and misses. Here, that bet would be $8,800. Challenger 1 could also make a small bet to lock Challenger 2 out of second place but that concedes the win. Her wager of $8,000 is in the no-man's-land of neither being enough to win nor small enough to clinch second prize.
