The evening was an epic disaster, beyond even the worst expectations for what would unfold.

CNN’s decision to host a prime-time town hall with Donald Trump already looked like a terrible idea going into Wednesday night, and now it looks like, well, whatever is German for “letting an insurrection-inciting sociopath take a shit in your collective mouth on live TV—and get applause for it.”
Not surprisingly, things started out with Trump lying about the 2020 election, which he claimed—and would continue to claim throughout the evening—was “rigged.”
Asked by moderator Kaitlan Collins if he had any regrets about the events that transpired on January 6, 2021—i.e., when he incited an insurrection that left multiple people dead—Trump called it a “beautiful day,” referred to the Black police officer who shot Ashli Babbitt as a “thug,” falsely claimed Mike Pence could have overturned the election results (and that the VP’s life was never in danger), and tried to pin everything on Nancy Pelosi.
Then, he said he would pardon “many” of the people involved in the violent riot.
Next, the subject turned to the fact that a jury on Tuesday found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. Despite the fact that he had literally just said he would pardon many of the people involved in one of the worst days in US history in a second term, the evening somehow took an even darker turn with Trump:
mocking Carroll’s story (of him attacking her)
referring to the attack as “hanky panky”
saying he feels sorry for Carroll’s then husband
saying “this is a fake story, a made-up story”
…all of which was interspersed with laughter and applause from the audience made up of Republican and undeclared voters.
Where to go from there? How about the former president of the United States—and current GOP front-runner for the 2024 nomination—saying the US should just default on its debt?
Then it was time for another completely insane—and unchecked—lie, which this time took the form of Trump claiming before Roe v. Wade was overturned, “they could kill the baby in the ninth month or after the baby was born.”
After that Trump decided to claim he’d finished “the wall,” because why not?
Next it was another solid for his pal Vladimir Putin.
Followed by an attack on Collins… ["nasty person"]
More lies about the 2020 election…
And for his big finish, a pretty clear vow to not accept the results of the 2024 election should he lose again
Obviously, the question at this time is whether or not CNN—and the rest of the media watching this train wreck from afar—has learned its lesson, and will endeavor to avoid repeating this kind of thing. And the answer, unfortunately, is probably “not a f--king chance.”
In a statement, a CNN spokesperson said, “Tonight, Kaitlan Collins exemplified what it means to be a world-class journalist. She asked tough, fair, and revealing questions. And she followed up and fact-checked President Trump in real time to arm voters with crucial information about his positions as he enters the 2024 election as the Republican front-runner. That is CNN’s role and responsibility: to get answers and hold the powerful to account.”
