The breakthrough success of Disintegration is a validation of 80s alternative music.

Much like Depeche Mode’s Violator, both bands were mildly successful 80s alt bands who appeared to have already hit their zenith - and fans were OK with that - when they found another gear and became top of the chart darlings, all without alienating their fans.
