(Largest by area outside of Alaska!) Yeah, I think part of why it's a surprise is because the metro area population is way further down the list.

Depending how you measure it, Jacksonville is around the 40th largest metro in the US. It just happens that the city itself is large (area wise and population wise) but there is much more limited population outside the city.
Sorta the opposite of Boston which is the 24th largest city proper by population, but is in the top 10 metro areas for population.
Or, more starkly, Miami which is 44th (city) but either #8 or #11 based on how you measure its metro.
