Be willing to look and sound like an idiot. Just talk. Sometimes it will be amazing. Sometimes there will be confusion. Most people are very nice and they really appreciate the effort. I am not even joking when I say my attempts at speaking italian are about 20% Spanish, confirmed by my multilingual brother. The locals are masters at keeping a straight face.
